The Story

The title of this website comes from a Navajo story of a goddess named Changing woman. Depending on the translation she can also be called Ever-Changing woman, or She-Who-Chaingeth (Asdzaa Nadleehe).

Changing Woman fell in love with the Sun, and bore him twin boys. One twin’s name was Monster-Slayer. The other was named Child-born-of-Water. By one account of the story, (the story I heard) the twins, although Native American, had very light skin, light eyes and hair the color of their father. One day they went to their mother and asked her who their father was. At first she would not tell them. Then she relented. They wanted to go see him, so Changing-Woman sent them to Spider-Woman who would help them.

There were giant monsters on the earth at that time, and they were terrorizing the people. So the twins went to see Spider-Woman. She helped them to get to their father. At first the Sun did not acknowledge that the twins were his children. But they finally proved that this was so.

The Sun then gave them powerful weapons so that they could kill the monsters. Each time a monster was killed, its body was turned to stone. You can still see these stones all over New Mexico and the Southwest. You can also see the home of Spider-Woman who lives on top of Spider Rock.

There are several stories about these warrior twins. And it’s from them that I got the idea of The Golden Child.
